MSHSAA Recognizes Bob Horton with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award
10/9/2026

Bob Horton was presented with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award during the Ozark Grand Slam at Ozark High School on Oct. 9, recognizing a career of service to MSHSAA and a lasting impact throughout Missouri.

The Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award honors individuals whose dedication and service have made a lasting impact on interscholastic activities across the state. Horton’s career as a teacher, coach, administrator and longtime contributor to MSHSAA championship events reflects that commitment.

For half a century, Horton has served the sport of volleyball as a player, official, rules interpreter, clinician, mentor and leader. His connection to the sport began as a student at Central High School in Springfield and continued at the University of Missouri, where he competed on the men’s collegiate club team and began officiating. He later started the Springfield Volleyball Club men’s team, where he played setter.

Horton’s impact on high school volleyball has been especially significant through his work with MSHSAA. A longtime member of the MSHSAA State Leadership Team, Horton spent 20 years serving as the Rules Interpreter for Southwest Missouri, helping officials, coaches and schools understand and consistently apply the rules of the sport. Before becoming a rules interpreter, he also served as a Mechanics Clinician, helping educate and develop volleyball officials throughout the region.

His own officiating career has included regular season, district, sectional and quarterfinal contests, along with more than 10 MSHSAA Final Four matches. Horton has also officiated club and collegiate volleyball during his career.

At the local level, Horton has been an active leader within the Southwest Missouri volleyball officiating community, serving in various officer positions with the Southwest Missouri Officials Association and Ozarks Volleyball Officials Association. His service has helped strengthen the officiating profession and provide generations of officials with the resources and support needed to succeed.

Perhaps Horton’s greatest contribution, however, has been his willingness to mentor others. Officials, coaches and players have regularly turned to him for guidance because of his knowledge of the sport, commitment to fairness and ability to build positive relationships with those around him.

Throughout his career, Horton has built a reputation for integrity, sportsmanship and respect. His commitment to doing things the right way while treating others with respect has made an impact that extends well beyond the volleyball court.

The Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award is named in honor of longtime MSHSAA attorney Mal Mayse and recognizes individuals whose careers exemplify integrity, service and commitment to interscholastic activities.

After 50 years dedicated to volleyball, Horton’s influence can be seen not only in the matches he has officiated, but in the countless officials he has helped educate, mentor and prepare to serve the sport for generations to come.
