MSHSAA Recognizes Mike Agers with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award

Mike Agers was presented with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award during the MSHSAA Boys Golf Championships, recognizing a career defined by leadership and lifelong dedication to high school athletics in Missouri.

The award, presented by the Missouri State High School Activities Association, is one of the Association’s highest honors and recognizes individuals whose service has had a lasting and meaningful impact on interscholastic activities across the state.

Agers began his career in education in 1975 at North St. Francois County High School after graduating from Southwest Missouri State University, where he was a multi-sport athlete in both basketball and football. Throughout his career, he coached golf, basketball and football, while also serving as a referee in multiple sports.

His impact on golf has been especially significant. Agers coached high school golf for 29 years, leading his program to success that included an individual state champion and a team runner-up finish. His dedication to the sport extended beyond coaching, as he served as a district manager for more than 20 years, helping oversee and administer competitions at the local level.

In addition to his coaching career, Agers made a lasting impact as a basketball official, working for more than 25 years at the high school level. During that time, he officiated multiple Final Fours and served as both a rules interpreter and evaluator, helping mentor and develop other officials. His football officiating career included numerous playoff assignments and a state championship game.

Following his retirement from education in 2004, Agers continued his service to student-athletes by working as a state tournament manager for MSHSAA, further contributing to the success of championship events across Missouri.

This year marks an extraordinary milestone—50 years of involvement in high school golf—a testament to Agers’ passion, dedication and lasting influence on the sport.

The Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award is named in honor of longtime MSHSAA leader Mal Mayse and recognizes individuals whose careers exemplify integrity, service and commitment to student-athletes.
