MSHSAA Recognizes Dr. Kerwin Irhahn with Irvin Keller Award

Dr. Kerwin Urhahn was presented with the Irvin A. Keller Award at the MIAAA Spring Conference Banquet on April 12, 2026, recognizing a career defined by leadership, service and a lasting impact on interscholastic athletics in Missouri.

The Irvin A. Keller Award is presented by MSHSAA to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and leadership in school athletics. Dr. Urhahn’s career—highlighted by 16 years as executive director of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA)—exemplifies the values represented by the award.

Dr. Urhahn served as Executive Director of MSHSAA for 16 years, working closely with schools, administrators and statewide organizations to strengthen and advance high school sports and activities for Missouri students. During his tenure, he collaborated extensively with the Missouri Association of School Administrators (MASA), Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MoASSP) and Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA), helping guide policy and initiatives designed to support student-athletes and educational communities across the state.

His leadership extended beyond Missouri at the national level. Dr. Urhahn served on the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Board of Directors, representing Section V from 2018 to 2021, and was elected President of the NFHS Board during the 2020-21 school year. He also served on the NFHS Technology Committee and Constitution Task Force and presented at numerous national conferences for the NFHS and NIAAA.

Before joining MSHSAA, Dr. Urhahn built a strong foundation in education and athletics at the local level. He retired after 31 years in education, beginning his career as a mathematics teacher at Bloomfield High School, where he taught for six years while coaching volleyball, basketball, baseball and golf. During his final three years of teaching, he also served as athletic director and directed three major basketball tournaments.

Dr. Urhahn later served as principal at Bloomfield High School for three years, continuing his involvement in athletics while coaching baseball during his final year as principal. In 2000, he became superintendent of the Portageville School District, a position he held for six years, remaining active in athletics by coaching volleyball and softball. While at Portageville, he was elected as the southeast representative on the MSHSAA Board of Directors, serving two-and-a-half years before being named executive director.

Dr. Urhahn is a graduate of Oran High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Mathematics and a Master of Arts in Secondary Administration from Southeast Missouri State University. He earned an Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Saint Louis University and a Master of Arts in Positive Coaching from the University of Missouri.

The Irvin A. Keller Award honors individuals whose careers reflect integrity, leadership and service to interscholastic athletics. Dr. Kerwin Urhahn’s influence at the local, state and national levels makes him a deserving recipient of this prestigious recognition.
