MSHSAA Recognizes Cape Girardeau CVB with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award
The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) honored the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award at the 2025 Boys Volleyball Championships on May 28, 2025.
The award celebrates long-standing partnerships and exceptional contributions to MSHSAA’s mission. Under the leadership of Executive Director Brenda Newbern, the Cape Girardeau CVB—branded as “Visit Cape”—has consistently demonstrated dedication to hosting high-caliber events that create meaningful experiences for Missouri student-athletes, coaches and communities.
“MSHSAA has been a part of my career since joining the hospitality industry for the past 24 years, from hotel sales to tourism director, and it is one of the most valued relationships.” Newbern said. “Youth sports have such a profound influence on young people in their physical, mental and social development.”
The partnership between MSHSAA and Cape Girardeau spans decades. Over the years, the city has hosted numerous state championship events, including:
- MSHSAA Girls and Boys Volleyball Championships (held at the Show Me Center)
- MSHSAA Boys and Girls Golf Championships (held at Dalhousie Golf Club)
These championships bring thousands of student-athletes, fans and families to the region each year, bolstering local tourism and reinforcing the city’s commitment to youth development through athletics and fine arts.
