Sports Medicine Advisory Committee

Held September 16, 2019

  1. Recommend updating the MSHSAA Position Statement on Iron Deficiency in Endurance Athletes per the recommendation of Dr. Kim Colter. (Vote 9-0)

Rationale:  Additional information has recently been released regarding iron deficiency that Dr. Colter and other members of the committee favor adding to the already existing document on iron deficiency that was authored by Dr. Colter.

  1. Recommend approval of the Sports Medicine Page on the MSHSAA website, which serves the MSHSAA Sports Medicine Manual.  (Vote 9-0)

  1. Recommend removal of (1) NFHS SMAC Update: NATA Document on the Care of the Spine Injured Athlete, (2) NATA Statement: Appropriate Care of the Spine-Injured Athlete from the Position Statement section of the Sports Medicine Page of the MSHSAA website due to lack of final and official approval from the NATA. (Vote 9-0)

  1. Recommend revising the WBGT Guidelines as follows:

-Remove language of “Consider delaying or rescheduling competitions” from the orange and red tolerance levels found on the WBGT Guideline chart.

(Vote 9-0)

Rationale:  Clarifies to schools that it is not “required” to delay or cancel contests at these levels due to the acclimatization that athletes have already met and the fact that contests provides a setting for student athletes in which there are natural breaks in play that occur.

Amended: Recommend revising the Orange tolerance level (MS 84.0-86.9)(HS 87.0-89.9) and the Red tolerance level (MS 87.0-90.0)(HS 90.0-92.0) of the WBGT Guidelines as follows:

- Remove statement, “Consider delaying or rescheduling competitions” from both the orange and red tolerance levels.

-Add to the red tolerance level the statement, “Games/Contests - implement additional official’s timeouts for water breaks due to unusual heat/humidity/environmental conditions that may create risks for players”.

Rationale:  Clarifies to schools that it is not “required” to delay or cancel contests at either the orange or red tolerance levels due to the acclimatization that athletes have already met and the fact that contests typically provide a setting in which there are natural breaks in play that occur.  In addition, the amended language is implementing additional water breaks under official’s time outs when a WBGT reading falls within the red tolerance level.

  1. Recommend the following suggested guidelines for the use and location of AED’s, information to be posted to the Sports Medicine page.  (Vote 8-0)
  1. AED should be stored in a safe place.
  2. All Athletic Trainers, Coaches, Administration, School Nurses and PE teachers should have access to an AED on school property
  3. Institutions sponsoring athletic events/activities should have a AED on site or access to one at each athletic venue for practices, games, or other athletic events.  Am AED should be located within two minutes from the locations of any athletic activity.
  4. Location of AED should be well marked, publicized, accessible, and known among all trained staff.

Rationale:  SMAC wants to at least take a position and be record on the importance of having AED’s accounted for on school campuses and particularly in close proximity to where athletic competitions occur.  The committee believes having “suggested guidelines” that outlines the presences and location of AED’s is important.

  1. Recommend changing MSHSAA Bylaw 3.1, coaching requirements to include the following to be an approved school coach:  (Vote8-0)
  1. Concussion Education (every two years)
  2. Heat Illness Education (every two years)
  3. AED/CPR Training (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) (every two years) (Already Exists)
  4. Equipment Fitting (Football Coaches Only) (every two years)

Amended:  Recommend that the Board place on the 2020 Area Meeting Agenda a change to MSHSAA Bylaw 3.1, coaching requirements to include the following to be an approved school coach:

  1. Concussion Education (Annually)
  2. Heat Illness Education (every two years)
  3. AED/CPR Training (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) (every two years)
  4. Equipment Fitting (Football Coaches Only) (every two years)
  5. Mental Health Education (every two years)

Rationale:  Heat Illness prevention and recognition is a growing topic nationally and has been for several years.  While we have recommendations and requirements in place such as WBGT and 16-day Heat Acclimatization, the committee feels that actual education in Heat Illness is critical for coaches in order to assist with preventing potential catastrophic situations.  The committee also believe the proper fitting of football equipment is extremely important to assist with prevention of injuries and safety for football players.  There is currently no formal training that football coaches received for the fitting of equipment.
