Music Advisory Committee Recommendations

Held on May 22, 2019

 

- Recommend to amend Section 6-C-3 of the MSHSAA Music Manual to clarify silent play. ‘Silent play’ can include blowing open air, ‘sizzling’, counting aloud, clapping or patting rhythms, but without creating any audible pitch on the instrument.  (Motion passed 7-0)

 

- Recommend adding the phrase ‘maximum allowable parameters’ in vocal sight reading literature requirements.

                     

- Recommend removing the Class 4 SATB vocal sight reading selection The Echoing Green from the current rotation.  

               

- Recommend adding the following statements to Sections 3-A-3, 4-B-2 and 5-B-2 of the MSHSAA Music Manual regarding contrasting style. 

                Section 3-A-3:  It is recommended that vocal entries perform selections of contrasting style and both selections shall be limited to those appearing on the prescribed graded music list. Contrasting style may include but is not limited to musical period, language, tempo, style, composer and key. 

                Section 4-B-2a and 5-B-2a:  It is recommended at least two numbers of contrasting literature

- Recommend making no changes in the current classification system for music activities and to move the release of class and district assignments to Friday of week 22 on the Standardized Calendar beginning with the 2019-20 school year.

 

- Recommend keeping the current music online rules review format and release date in August and not split out the music festival information for a later date.
