GOLF ADVISORY RECOMMENDATIONS

May 23, 2013

1.       Each coach must enter a plus/minus to par score for every nine holes played during regular season matches and tournaments into the MSHSAA website.

Rationale: This will allow players to be paired accurately in the district tournament.

2.       Golf Coaches are prohibited from playing golf during all school golf competitions (this includes all regular season matches and tournaments as well as all postseason tournaments).

Rationale:

a)      Coaches have the opportunity to coach during competition.

b)      Coaches are responsible to assist with the management of the event.

c)       Coaches have the responsibility for the well-being & behavior of their student athletes.

d)      High School Golf events are for the student participants.

3.       Amend the electronic communicational device policy from “is disqualified” to “may be disqualified.”

Cell Phones on the golf course: Golfers may not use electronic communicational devices or equipment on the golf course. The penalty is may be disqualification.

Rationale: To align MSHSAA rules with the USGA policy.

4.       Recommended that the “scoring area” at all District and Sectional Tournaments be clearly defined by the host before the event begins and that it is discussed with participants and coaches prior to the event.

Rationale: Players and Coaches need a defined area to go over scorecards and any scoring issues so all involved in the tournament know when they should be deemed to have left the scoring area.

5.       Recommended the USGA Section on Golf Etiquette be placed in the MSHSAA Golf Manual and added to the Golf Online Rules Review.

Rationale: To emphasize the importance of Etiquette to High School Golfers and Coaches.

6.       Recommended the Golf Coaches not be allowed to give advice once the player’s ball is on the green and player has reached the green area (10 yards).

Rationale: Last year we implemented the coaches could not be on the putting green and they are now standing on the edge and trying to read putts, etc. and are causing delays.
