SPEECH, DEBATE AND THEATRE  ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Held May 2, 2017

1.      Recommend adding following recommendation in the Speech, Debate, and Theatre Manual, Page 10, 5.G.:  It is recommended that all efforts should be given to starting a last round of an invitation tournament by 9:30 p.m. on Friday nights.

Rationale: An effort to complete competition earlier and get everyone home earlier.

2.      Recommend changing Section 12.J of the Speech, Debate, and Theatre Manual to read:  Schools having three or more qualifiers in Speech Events must provide timekeepers for events on Saturday.  All Schools are encouraged to bring a timekeeper.  In the elimination rounds, directors/judges shall also keep time.  NOTE:  Schools are not required to provide timekeepers for Debate on Friday.

Rationale: Judges are able to keep time for Debate.

3.      Recommend adding “Quality Points” as a tie breaking criteria on Page 30, Section 11.C.1c of the Speech, Debate and Theatre Manual.

Rationale: An effort to emphasize quality points as part of the tie-breaking process.

*4.     Recommend adding Duo Interpretation as an event in Speech, Debate and Theatre.

Rationale: Some feel it gives students more opportunities.

5.      Recommend changing Page 17, Section 7.5.j of the Speech, Debate, and Theatre Manual to take out “or differentiates performers.”

Rationale: To clear up confusion of the wording related to costumes.

6.      Recommend removing all mention of “microphone” for the Radio Speaking event in the Speech, Debate and Theatre Manual (remove Section 7.C.F.4 on Page 21).

Rationale: Some districts use microphones and some do not.  The consensus – it’s not fair to a student who has never used one to all of a sudden be put in front of one.
