More Info

The following is a summary of the order of operations completed when classifying sports and activities. This is not a comprehensive accounting of all aspects of the process. For this, you should refer to By-Law 5.1 and the Board Policy on Enrollment, Classification, Championship Factor, and Districts in the MSHSAA Handbook.

Step 1: Create the initial breaks, determining the number of schools to be in each classification.
  • Percentage of schools in Class 1
  • Differential of 2.0 or less in Classes 2 and above

Step 2: Shift MSIP-Exempt (Private, Parochial, Charter) Schools with championship factor points up, if applicable, as follows:
  • 0-2 points - Stay in classification based on enrollment
  • 3-7 points - Shift up 1 classification from enrollment placement
  • 8+ points - Shift up 2 classifications from enrollment placement

Step 3: Move schools from the bottom of each classification down to match the number determined in Step 1.

Step 4: If a tie in enrollment exists between the top of one class and the bottom of th next, school(s) in the upper classification will be moved down.
