Music Advisory Committee Summary

Held on May 27, 2009

1.    Recommend to appoint an ad hoc committee to investigate the possibility of using MP3 recordings for adjudicator comments for the MSHSAA state large group music festivals.

2.    Recommend leaving the accompanist limitation at 20 events per festival day for the district and state music festivals.

3.    Recommend to allow the school music director to enter more than two large group entries per category (mixed, men's and women's) to the MSHSAA state large group festivals, with each secondary group sight reading one class lower than the top group. No school shall exceed the maximum of four conducted choral events with chamber choir entries being included in the total number of four.

4.    Recommend to not create an event for classical guitar at the MSHSAA solo/small ensemble music festivals.

5.    Recommend to remove the foreign language requirement which requires all grade A miscellaneous vocal ensembles to perform the selection in the original language.

6.    Recommend to create a new event type to allow a school to enter a third band. The third band entry will follow the same criteria as established for second band entries and the third band entry shall sight read two classes lower than the first band.

7.    Recommend to include the following information in the MSHSAA Music Manual regarding multi-movement works.

When using multi-movement works the soloist and/or ensemble must perform the work as it appears on the MSHSAA prescribed Graded Music List. Any information regarding the performance of certain movements will be included in parenthesis beside the title of the work. For example, if the work indicates the soloist/ensemble must perform movement 1 and 3 this will be indicated in parenthesis (e.g. mvmt 1 & 3). If no information appears in parenthesis beside the title the performer(s) will be expected to prepare one movement or a combination of movements to satisfy the three minute minimum time requirement. A penalty of one rating lower shall be imposed for any solo or small ensemble entry that does not perform a work as indicated on the MSHSAA Prescribed Graded Music List.

8.    Recommend to continue with the current requirement for all small conducted ensembles at the state large group festivals.

All items approved.
