Summary of the Basketball Advisory Committee

Held April 11, 2014 at the MSHSAA Office, Columbia, MO

*

1.

Recommend that MSHSAA survey all basketball coaches to learn statewide interest in pursuing the shot clock for high school basketball in Missouri.

Rationale:  The Basketball Advisory Committee has strong interest in the shot clock and would like feedback from all coaches.

*

2.

Recommend that MSHSAA survey all basketball coaches to ask if they would be in favor of switching from quarters to halves and secondly, if they are in favor of the change, would they prefer 16 minute or 18 minute halves.

Rationale:  The Basketball Advisory Committee has strong interest in switching from quarters to halves and would like feedback from all coaches.

3.

Recommend that the officials evaluations extend thru post season contests.

Rationale:  The Basketball Advisory Committee feels like evaluating post-season officials would help provide feedback to the officials.

4.

Recommend that basketball preseason scrimmages start as early as the Friday of week #19 and conclude by Thursday of week #20.

Rationale:  The additional allowable days would allow more flexibility to schools.

AMENDED:  A scrimmage may be conducted after your team has completed nine conditioning practices and before your first contest.

5.

Recommend that there be a minimum 12-minute warm-up period before each varsity game during the regular season.

Rationale:  Some areas of the state have experienced schools that are only allowing 8-10 minutes of warm-up.  The Basketball Advisory Committee felt there should be some uniformity of the amount of warm-up time given before varsity contests.

6.

Recommend that Class 4 sectionals be moved to Tuesday of week #36 in order to open up additional facilities to host.  Class 5 sectionals will remain on Wednesday of week #36.

Rationale:  This would allow venues to be used that normally would not be available because the host school may have a team or teams also playing in Class 4 or 5 which creates a burden for the host school.
