COLUMBIA – Football district assignments for the next
classification cycle were released Friday by the Missouri State High School
Activities Association, aligning schools for round-robin district play for the
2010 and 2011 football seasons.
The enrollment breaks for the new classification cycle
are as follows:

Only schools with enrollments of 200 or less may choose to
play in the 8-man division. In 11-man football, the largest 32 schools based on
student enrollment in grades 9-12 are classified in Class 6, while the smallest
64 schools are assigned to Class 1. The next-largest 64 schools are then
classified in Class 2, the next 64 in Class 3, and the next 64 in Class 4. The

Schools are grouped into districts within each
classification based on geographical location and conference affiliation. The
ability for all schools in a particular conference to complete a conference
schedule takes priority in making football assignments. However, in instances
where all schools in a conference cannot complete a full league schedule (every
school plays every other school once), geography takes priority. The latter
scenario occurs occasionally in conferences with more than eight members who
also compete across multiple classifications.
Due to the net increase of six football schools for the new
cycle, Class 5 was expanded from 11 districts to 12 to better accommodate the 51
schools that will play in that division for the next two years. The 12-district
format was selected by the MSHSAA Board of Directors on Wednesday. In the 12-district setup in Class 5, three
districts will include five schools, and the other nine districts will have
four schools. The revised Class 5 playoff bracket will be released at a
later date.
District play for all four-team districts will begin in Week
8 (October 15 in 2010) of the regular season, while six-team and five-team districts
in the 8-man classification and the three Class 5 districts will begin in Week

The first-allowable practice date for 2010 will be on
Monday, August 9. The preseason interscholastic scrimmages will take
place August 20-21, and the first-possible contest date will be Friday, August
27.
Nine schools are entered in football districts for the first
time, including: Lincoln in Class 1; Barat Academy, Lift for Live Academy,
Christian, and Hollister in Class 2; Imagine Renaissance Academy, Confluence
Prep Academy and East (Kansas City) in Class 3.
The Hickman Mills District High School is a consolidated school from
Hickman Mills and Ruskin.
In 8-man football, there are two new programs with Tarkio
and Northwest (Hughesville) joining the division. Worth County and
Northeast Nodaway have formed a cooperative sponsorship, allowing NNHS students
to play football for the first time.
Changing to Class 1 for 2010 and 2011 is former Class
2 school Windsor. Entering into a
cooperative sponsorship are Cole Camp and Green Ridge, while King City and
Pattonsburg also entered into a cooperative sponsorship.
In Class 2, the following schools move up from Class
1: Adrian, Penney, St. Paul Lutheran and Sarcoxie, while Lutheran (St. Peters)
and Herculaneum moved down from Class 3. Barat Academy, Lift for Life
Academy, Christian and Hollister are all new programs. McAuley Catholic is
hosting a cooperative sponsorship with College Heights Christian.
In Class 3, five schools move up from Class 2,
including: Orchard Farm, Southern Boone, Wright City, Maryville and Van Horn
(Independence). Moving down to Class 3 from Class 4 are Westport, Center
(Kansas City) and Central (Kansas City), while Northeast Law & Public
Service also joins Class 3 from Class 5.
Three new programs begin play in Class 3, including Imagin Renaissance
Academy, Confluence Prep Academy and East (Kansas City).
Moving up to Class 4 from Class 3 are nine schools: Smithville,
Sullivan, Perryville, St. Francis Borgia, Savannah, Potosi, Soldan
International Studies, Moberly and Mexico. Moving down to Class 4 from
Class 5 are Roosevelt and Central (Cape Cirardeau).
In Class 5, a total of seven schools move up from Class
4: Willard, Staley, Smith-Cotton, Poplar Bluff, Normandy, Hickman Mills
District High School and Branson. Due to
the consolidation of Wellston and Normandy, the Vikings move up to Class
5. With the consolidation of Hickman
Mills and Ruskin, the Hickman Mills District High School will also be a member
of Class 5. Riverview Gardens and Lee’s
Summit move down from Class 6.
Three programs move up to Class 6 from Class 5 with Pattonville,
Raymore-Peculiar and Eureka slated to compete in MSHSAA’s largest
classification.
There are eight 11-man and six 8-man cooperative
sponsorships in the sport of football for the next classification cycle.
Cooperative sponsorships permit smaller schools to collaborate in sponsoring a
program to create more participation opportunities for students. The
enrollments of the two cooperating schools are combined for classification
purposes.
The 2010 and 2011 seasons conclude with the annual MSHSAA
Show-Me Bowl at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. The state championship dates
for 2010 are November 26-27, while the event will be held November 25-26 in 2011.
