Held March 3, 2008

1. Recommend an item be placed on the 2008 MSHSAA Annual Ballot deleting the team limit from By-Law 311.1g1.

The following is the current wording of the by-law:

311.1 g., Wrestling

1. No wrestling tournament shall include more than 16 teams, except:

(a) A conference tournament when only conference schools are participating,

(b) An invitational tournament held during the period from the Friday of week 24 to the Saturday of week 26 of the Standardized Calendar may include up to a maximum of 24 teams provided no team will compete on more than one school day, and competition on a school day does not begin prior to 4:00 p.m.

2. An individual student shall wrestle no more than the allowable matches on any one calendar day as permitted in the NFHS Wrestling Rules.

The revised wording would read as follows:

311.1 g., Wrestling –

1. There is no limit on the number of teams participating in a tournament provided no team will compete on more than one school day, and competition on a school day does not begin prior to 4:00 p.m.

2. An individual student shall wrestle no more than the allowable matches on any one calendar day as permitted in the NFHS Wrestling Rules. (APPROVED)

2. Recommend an item be placed on the 2008 MSHSAA Annual Ballot to add a new section to By-Law 381 to define wrestling tournaments and non-tournament events.

The following is the current wording of the by-law:

381.1 - An individual wrestler shall represent his/her school in no more than a maximum of 50 matches, whether they are scoring or not, prior to the district tournament.

If approved the by-law would add the following:

381.2 - An individual wrestler is limited to 15 events (no more than six of which may be tournaments). A tournament is defined as any event in which awards are given and /or a champion is determined by any means or any format that involves five or more teams, at one site, on any given date. All other contests at one site, on any given date will count as one non-tournament event. (APPROVED)

3. Went on record in favor of having an on-site meet physician present at weigh-ins on the Friday of each District Tournament to evaluate any questionable skin conditions as permitted by NFHS Wrestling Rule 4-2-4. Preferably this physician would have a background treating wrestlers and skin conditions. (APPROVED)

4. Recommend changing Item 7a in the state tournament pass policy in the Wrestling Manual to the following:

a.    Teams: Each school which qualifies one or more wrestlers for the state meet will be issued passes for each qualifier plus one additional pass for each approved coach listed on the school site on the MSHSAA Web site under Coaches and Directors. (TABLED)
