MSHSAA Recognizes Two Golf Contributors

(For Immediate Release – May 20, 2008)

COLUMBIA – The Missouri State High School Activities Association recently presented Distinguished Service Awards to long-time golf contributors Jeff Southwick of Richmond and Stu McMains of Brookfield in separate ceremonies at the MSHSAA Boys Golf Championships in Springfield.

The MSHSAA’s Distinguished Service Awards program was established in 1988 to recognize individuals and organizations that have made lifelong contributions to the ideals of interscholastic activities.  The addition of Southwick and McMains bring the total to 167 individuals honored in the 20-year history of this program.

“Both of these gentlemen are first-class individuals who have not only made our district and state golf tournaments successful, but have gone the extra mile during their careers to advance interscholastic golf around the state,” said MSHSAA’s Rick Kindhart who coordinates the awards program.

Southwick, a native of Excelsior Springs, Mo., received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, where he played four years of collegiate golf and was an NCAA qualifier.  He began his career in education at Hardin-Central before coming to Richmond in 1990. He served as a middle school science teacher and high school golf coach for boys and girls. He was promoted to Director of Athletics in 2000, a role he has held ever since. His golf teams have won two state championships and finished second on five occasions, while claiming 10 district titles and nine consecutive MRVC conference titles during that span.  He has served a district and state course manager for the MSHSAA Boys and Girls Golf Championships and also served on the MSHAA Golf Advisory Committee.

He was presented with his award on Tuesday, May 13 at Deer Lake Golf Course in Springfield during the Class 2 team and individual awards ceremonies at the 69th MSHSAA Boys Golf Championships.

McMains attended Davis County Community High School in Bloomfield, Iowa and earned degrees from Webster University, Truman State University and the University of Missouri-Columbia.  He spent 30 years in education before his retirement in 2000 and was active in interscholastic athletics for 23 years at Brookfield High School. He managed numerous district tournaments for the MSHSAA as well as serving as a state meet tournament manager, committee member, and rules official.

He was presented with his award on Sunday, May 11 at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar during preliminary meetings for the Class 1 Boys Golf Championships.

The MSHSAA DSA program and awards presented are underwritten by Missouri Jostens representatives.
