Summary of Sports Medicine Advisory Committee

Held January 5, 2012

***1.       Recommend to the Board of Directors that they place an item on the ballot to make a change to the Conditioning Days by-law (3.9:  Conditioning).  MSHSAA-member schools will follow the Preseason Heat-Acclimatization Guidelines for Secondary School Athletics (2009) as set up by the Inter-Association Task Force for Preseason Secondary School Athletics for all fall sports (spirit), effective Fall 2012.  All winter and spring sports (spirit) are to follow the 14-day conditioning rule.  If this motion is put into place, the first contest date for all fall sports (spirit) would have to be adjusted.

Amended to:

1.a.      To place on the Questionnaire effective fall 2012 that ALL athletes in ALL sports/spirit are required to have 14 days of conditioning before their first contest.

1.b.      That an informational PowerPoint Presentation be produced explaining the Preseason Heat-Acclimatization Guidelines for Secondary School Athletics (2009) for input in a survey collected by the MSHSAA staff (timeline February 2012).

2.       Recommend that MSHSAA continues to support the NFHS definition of “appropriate healthcare professional” to be defined as an MD or DO only in regards to signing off on the Skin Lesion form in wrestling.  (Note:  To be re-evaluated for the 2012-13 school year.)
