Held April 5, 2006
1. Went on record in support of the position that appropriate medical coverage at MSHSAA events is a legitimate expense, and any applicable compensation should be at the local rate. (Approved)
2. Went on record to clarify that, if a student athletic trainer is required to cover an event without the supervision of a certified athletic trainer, the individual is to be identified as a student serving as a first responder and not identified as an athletic trainer. (Approved)
3. Went on record in support of the continuation to review and discuss random drug testing for high school student-athletes. (Approved)
4. Recommend that educational information be distributed to the schools regarding the prevention of communicable diseases and skin-infections, as it becomes available. (Approved)
5. Recommend the addition of the following explicative note to the Communicable Disease and Skin Infection Procedures in the MSHSAA Sports Medicine Manual: “Infectious skin diseases include those caused by the Staphylococcus aureus (Staph infections) and by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which are more difficult to treat.” (Approved)
6. Recommend that the MSHSAA Wrestling Weight Management Program be adopted for the 2006-07 school year. (Approved)
7. Went on record to highly recommend that treatment via IV fluids not be utilized as a means of returning a student-athlete to competition on the same day as receipt of such treatment. (Approved)
8. Recommend the addition of the following question to the Medical History section of the MSHSAA Preparticipation Sports Examination form: “Do you or any members of your family have a history of sickle cell trait?” (Approved)
