Music Advisory Committee Summary

Held on May 28, 2014

Recommend accepting the revisions for sight-reading as amended to begin with the 2014-15 school year.

Recommend a lowering of the overall rating in large group events for failure to provide each adjudicator with an original score of the works performed.

Recommend that the following language be included under the Purpose of District and State Festivals and Section 1-A (Ethics) of the MSHSAA Music Manual (see below).

Purpose of District and State Festivals:  “…They are: (1) to provide opportunities to demonstrate before the public the best knowledge, skills and musical repertoire taught through a particular activity, and (2) to evaluate each performance entered by a school system in comparison with the accepted standard of excellence. “

Section 1-A (Ethics):  “Please notify the MSHSAA office if you have a participant with a special need which might impact a performance.  Notification should be in writing no later than 2 weeks prior to the date of the festival detailing the specific needs or circumstances, in order for judges to be apprised and/or preparations to be made.  This correspondence should be submitted on official school letterhead and include the signatures of the school music director, principal and athletic/activities director.  The MSHSAA office will communicate with the appropriate festival personnel regarding the request.  Please note that there will be no modifications made in adjudicating criteria for the performance.

Recommend that the following language be included in the 2014-15 MSHSAA Music Manual and to have MSHSAA work with MCDA to further define ‘quality literature’ in regards to second selections.

Literature for second selections not included on the MSHSAA Prescribed Graded Music List shall reflect the same criteria as those works currently appearing on the MSHSAA PML for vocal events.  It is not appropriate to perform pop, rock, country, Disney show tunes, selections from musicals, etc.  Any entry entering selections that fail to meet the established criteria shall result in the overall rating being lowered one rank.

Recommend including the timpani as the only allowable percussion instrument in brass choir events.

Recommend for any snare drum and keyboard mallet solo event which fails to perform with the instrument listed on the MSHSAA PML shall result in the rating being lowered one rank.

Recommend that a sub-committee be formed to review the current 2 tier music evaluative festival format.

Recommend increasing the number of large vocal ensemble events from 4 to 5 events per school of which a maximum of 2 events can be chamber choir entries.
